Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that has become increasingly popular in recent years for its many benefits, including improved physical fitness, stress relief, and self-defense skills. At Northern Colorado Jiu Jitsu, Head Professor Matt Shoup is dedicated to improving and protecting the lives of others through his passion for teaching jiu-jitsu. In this article, we will explore Matt’s background and accomplishments, his contributions to Northern Colorado Jiu-Jitsu, and the benefits of jiu-jitsu training.
Matt Shoup’s Background and Accomplishments
Matt Shoup called Northern Colorado home since the age of 10. As a child, he was frequently bullied and lived in constant fear of his next encounter with a bully. To address this concern, Matt initially began weight training in high school and into college. However, he soon learned that “gym muscles” did not equate to a self-defense tool.
Matt began his BJJ journey in 2007, where he quickly learned the lesson that gym muscles did not equal self-defense skills. His first jiu-jitsu class involved him being thrown, choked, and beaten to submission by a student half his age, size, and strength. Despite the initial discomfort, Matt was instantly hooked on jiu-jitsu and has been training ever since.
Over the past 15 years, Matt has competed in BJJ competitions both locally and internationally, earning his black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Master Rigan Machado. Additionally, he has instructed children’s BJJ for the last 10 years and has a passion for teaching law enforcement and first responders.
Contributions to Northern Colorado Jiu Jitsu
As the head professor of Northern Colorado Jiu Jitsu’s children’s jiu-jitsu program, Matt has played an instrumental role in the success of the program. He has also designed a program specifically for law enforcement and first responders. Through his expertise and passion for jiu-jitsu, Matt has helped many individuals improve their self-defense skills, physical fitness, and overall well-being.
In addition to his instruction, Matt is the founder and creator of The Gentle Art of Leadership Program®. This program focuses on developing leadership skills through the principles of jiu-jitsu, including discipline, respect, and accountability. Through this program, Matt hopes to instill in his students the values and mindset needed to succeed in all areas of life.
Advantages of practicing Jiu-Jitsu

Mental benefits include reduced stress, increased self-confidence, and improved problem-solving skills.
